چکیده

If one is to understand the pathophysiology of ocular oscillations it is imperative to distinguish between those involving only the slow system and those that are purely saccadic. Oscillations containing both saccades and slow phases require identification of the causative phase (i.e., that which takes the eyes away from their intended direction) and the corrective phase. Modem methods of recording have enabled us to make these determinations and thereby clarify the ocular motor mechanisms responsible for the particular oscillation in question. Table 1 lists 43 types of nystagmus along with many other terms found in the literature to describe them; similarly, Table 2 lists 16 saccadic oscillations and intrusions with other descriptive terms. The Tables evolved from those that appeared in previous chap ters on the subject. 1-4 The definitions and categorizations used herein are a result of the systematic application of criteria derived from accurate ocular motility recordings. Such cri teria clearly differentiate between nystagmus and other ocular motor oscillations and, as a result, some eye movements described by the word "nystagmus," were found to be saccadic oscillations. Most oscillations were named without the ben efit of accurate ocular motor recordings. Quotation marks are used for those os-

Nystagmus and Related Ocular Motility Disorders

General Concepts and Clinical Approach This chapter concerns abnormal eye movements that disrupt steady fixation and thereby degrade vision. We now know a good deal about the normal anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology of ocular motor control (1). Our approach is to apply this knowledge to nystagmus and other ocular oscillations, since pathophysiology provides a sounder conceptual framework th...

Ocular motor abnormalities in achiasmatic mutant Belgian sheepdogs: Unyoked eye movements in a mammal

We studied the eye movements of several members of a family of Belgian sheepdogs that includes achiasmatic mutants. Our aim was to identify the types of nystagmus and other ocular motor abnormalities exhibited by the mutants. We also recorded from several unaffected heterozygous carriers of the genetic mutation and from a normal Irish Setter. Mutant dogs exhibited nystagmus waveforms that were ...

10. Nystagmus and other ocular motor oscillations and intrusions

In Volume 1 , this chapter ( 1 ) contained a definition and at least one relevant reference for each type of nystagmus, saccadic oscillation or saccadic intrusion. Table 1 lists the 41 different types of nystagmus along with 64 other terms found in the l iterature to describe them ; similarly, Table 2 lists the 1 6 saccadic oscilla tions and intrusions with 27 other terms found in the literatu...

Eye movement abnormalities in multiple sclerosis.

Patients with multiple sclerosis commonly describe visual symptoms that result from several eye movement abnormalities that occur from disruption of critical pathways in the brainstem, cerebellum, and cerebral hemispheres. These abnormalities include internuclear ophthalmoplegia, ocular motor palsy, ocular misalignment, pathologic nystagmus, impaired saccades, saccadic intrusions, and impaired ...
